I’m Johnny, a user interface designer from Canada. I've always been passionate about design so that’s why at the age of thirteen I decided to teach myself. At first, I taught myself graphic design, but a couple of years later, I started to get a strong passion for web design. I created my first website when I was in high school, it wasn't very good, but I was excited. It wasn't very long until I wanted to make another one and since then I've never wanted to stop. After a few years of teaching myself, I decided to go to college to further my skills.
When I'm not designing, I enjoy spending time running, watching basketball and learning new creative applications. Even though I live in Canada, my favorite sports are basketball and soccer. I've been a Los Angeles Clippers fan for many years now, and I watch every game. Aside from sports, another passion of mine is technology. I believe having a passion for technology is really helpful as a designer because it gives you a better understanding of how users interact with different devices. Looking back at my previous work, it's nice to see how much I've improved and to know that the amount of time that I've spent teaching myself has finally paid off.
As a designer it's important to have a plan before you start any project, and that's where my design process comes in. Every project is different, but for the most part when I start a new project I go through the same process each time. With that in mind, here's how my design process looks from start to finish. If you have any questions about my process feel free to contact me.
01. Discovery & Research
This is the most important part of my process. I will create a detailed plan that defines the projects goals. After the plan is created, I will start collecting information about the company, industry, marketing strategy, competition, and target audience.
02. Creative Brainstorming
Once I have gathered all the relevant information about the project, I begin this stage by brainstorming and sketching out any idea that comes to mind. After I finish sketching, I will select the best concepts and continue to refine them.
03. High Fidelity Wireframes
During this stage, I start to focus on the basic layout while ignoring all distractions such as colours and graphics. This is a very important step in the process because it determines the structure and usability of the end product.
04. Visual Design
After the wireframes have been created, I take the best concepts and make them come to life. At this stage, I will determine the colour palette, typography and overall style that will continue throughout the whole project.
05. Interactive Prototypes
The prototype stage is where I test the final design to make sure there are no usability issues. In the case that I find one, I will go back and make some revisions to fix that certain issue. If I don't find any, I will continue forward onto the next stage.
06. Finishing Touches
The final step in my process is used to refine the project. This is where the final edits get made and spelling errors get caught. After the project is completed, I will create a backup so that if anything happens, I have a copy of all the files.
